This brilliant study of John Milton by Professor Hao Tianhu begins by performing the valuable service of correcting the record concerning the introduction of the English poet’s writings to a Chinese audience. Professor Hao demonstrates that Christian missionaries first brought Milton to the attention of the Chinese as early as 1832. This initiation occurred several years before Shakespeare was introduced to China even if the Bard did become symbolic of English literary culture during the late Qing period. It is noteworthy that a similar misperception of the relative historical importance of Milton and Shakespeare has long prevailed in the United States. Only after the American Civil War, in the latter part of the nineteenth century, did Shakespeare become a more prominent and popular cultural icon in the United States. In China, not only were Milton’s works introduced and translated into Chinese prior to those of Shakespeare, but also, as Professor Hao carefully demonstrates, Milton would by the early twentieth century play a broadly influential role in the cultural development of modern China.
Having established this historical basis for his argument, Professor Hao proceeds to reveal how different interpretations of Milton have held sway in China at various points during the twentieth century, beginning with Lu Xun’s questionable rendition of Milton’s Satan as an inspirational opponent of tyranny. In the West, this interpretation of Satan is associated with English Romantic poets (especially William Blake and Percy Shelley). Although most Milton scholars have since come to think otherwise about Satan, a similar view of God’s chief adversary was later championed by the great English scholar William Empson, who spent many years teaching Milton in China during the middle of the twentieth century. Professor Hao’s informative survey of Milton’s reception history in China culminates with the work of my former student, the brilliant Shen Hong, specifically his groundbreaking contribution to Milton studies, Milton’s Satan and the English Literary Tradition (2010).
Professor Hao’s magisterial study of Milton in China ultimately places the English poet in a global context, providing a valuable cross-cultural perspective on Milton that only an internationally conversant scholar such as Professor Hao could accomplish. He not only studied abroad but completed his dissertation at Columbia University under the supervision of the celebrated early modern scholar David Kastan (2006). Since then, he has become a widely recognized scholar of early modern literary culture in his own right, well known among colleagues in Europe and North America. This excellent new book will add even more substance and luster to his reputation by offering an accurate and nuanced account of the impact and use of Milton’s works in China over nearly two centuries.
